Athletic Performance
The Connecticut Speed School educates and coaches our athletes in all of the critical components of our "Foundation of Fundamentals." The science of nutrition and sports performance is amazingly dynamic. The School is committed to delivering what we believe to be the most effective methods, methodologies and instruction available in athletic performance today, most notably in developing speed, reactive and absolute strength, flexibility & mobility, explosive body movements and nutrition.
Movement Training Systems (MTS)
As part of this commitment Connecticut Speed School has partnered up with the Movement Training Systems (MTS) team located in Denver, CO to deliver an innovative training system geared to improving speed and overall athleticism. Nationally recognized athletic performance coach, Tom Sheehan has also joined the staff as our Director of Athletic Performance. Coach Sheehan has been working with the MTS team for the last nine years. See "Our Team" page to read more about Coach Sheehan.
Foundation of Fundamentals
Our "Foundation of Fundamentals" must be developed and improved on throughout the year. Too often athletes dedicate only two or three months (sometimes less) outside of their respective sports season to work on a few of the components of our "Foundation of Fundamentals." The honest and unfortunate truth is that the "Foundation" in many young athletes is partially, if not totally ignored. At the Connecticut Speed School we believe that this is a tremendous mistake and we are committed to putting our athletes in the best position to succeed in their respective sports. After all, you would not race in the Daytona 500 with four flat tires and with no oil in the engine.
The Connecticut Speed School's curriculum focuses on both the development and the application of the specific skills in our "Foundation of Fundamentals." In other words, athletes are only three-quarters of the way there once the foundation develops. Athletes must then learn how to apply their strength, explosive power, mobility and speed simultaneously within a split second to excel to the best of their ability on the athletic fields. This is where the MTS program delivers amazing results. See www.movementtrainingsystems.com for additional information.
Educational Programs
Our educational programs deliver critical mental development in our young students empowering them to compete academically to the absolute best of their ability. The Connecticut Speed School staff spent years researching some of the best vehicles to give our children advantages and we came up with Vedic Math and Chess. These programs are a must for children beginning in 1st grade (and older) for chess and usually 3rd or 4th grade and older for the Vedic Math. We also offer SAT/ ACT Exam Prep instruction for high school students that should begin in the student-athletes' sophomore year. Please visit our College Admissions page for more information.
Vedic Math Program
Vedic Math is a recently rediscovered system of mathematical thinking which originated in India. Vedic Math will allow you to perform computations in your head faster than a calculator and show students of all ages that math need not be feared. By eliminating the tedium associated with much of the American style of teaching, your child will be able to build mathematical thinking and build the foundations for later classes. Prerequisite-knowing multiplication tables up to 5 x 5.
Chess Program
Chess is a fascinating game, which can be played and enjoyed at all levels. Educational research indicates evidence of a strong positive correlation between chess and student academic performance. Multiple studies have shown that learning chess throughout the school years improves competence in mathematics and other cognitive development. The practical application of the skills learned while playing chess are the same skills necessary for academic excellence and lifelong success. Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning. Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem. Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions. We learn to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action. Chess works because it is self-motivating. The game has fascinated humans for almost 2000 years, and the goals of attack and defense, culminating in checkmate, inspire us to dig deep into our mental reserves. Connecticut Speed School will be putting together a Club Chess Team to compete in local tournaments. Our curriculum develops important tools children need to be successful in life and our chess program fits perfectly into our child development model.
Our chess programs are offered to children in 1st grade and older. Group classes consist of 10-12 students per instructor. Private and semi-private (4-6 students) are also available. |
